How To Know If You Have Arthritis in Your Feet.

Introduction.

Arthritis affects the joints in your body, and your foot contains over thirty joints. So, it won't be surprising that you can have the disease in your foot or knees.

If you are diagnosed with arthritis is a chance that you may get pain in your feet.

There are two main types of arthritis; osteoarthritis, which affects the first                                                     metatarsophalangeal joint MTP, which connects the big toe with the foot, and the                                                                           midfoot and ankle. OA also affects one specific joint.

The second is rheumatoid arthritis usually appears in both feet and affects the same joint on each side.

Different types of arthritis affecting the feet.

Gout is a type of arthritis that often affects only the feet and the big toe.  But can affect other parts of the body also.

Psoriatic arthritis PsA can cause sausage-like toes that swell, called dactylitis. With this disease, it also has inflammation of the tendons and ligaments that are attached to the bones.

The inflammation of the tissue connecting the heel to the toe can become bony projections or bone spurs, which can cause pain if it is pressed or rubbed on other bones or soft tissue.

Ankylosing spondylitis or ethnicities can cause pain and inflammation of the Achilles tendons.

Strategies to help with arthritis pain in the feet.

How can you ease the pain, stiffness and swelling of arthritis?

Using pain medication.

There are available over-the-counter pain relief. Also, your doctor will prescribe you drugs like NSAIDs or nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs. For example, NSAIDs could reduce pain, redness and swelling.

Taking Aspirin.

  • Ibuprofen.
  • Naproxen
  • Are just a few...

These contain prostaglandin, which are a group of lipids that are made at the tissue damage or infection that involves injury or illness.  There job is to control the process of inflammation and blood flow.

  • Stomach Aches.
  • Stomach Ulcers.
  • Anaemia
  • Headaches and Drowsiness.
  • Dizziness and you could have allergic reactions.

Proper footwear.

Having arthritis of the feet, it is essential that you get proper shoes, as you may suffer from hammertoes and bunions that could also happen with arthritis. The shoes must be comfortable and don't hurt you.

They have arch support, a heel cup, thick soles, and shock absorbers.

Reducing your weight.

When you have arthritis, your weight matters; if you are overweight or obese, you are walking around with excess weight and can be diagnosed with arthritis as a young adult or child.

Arthritis can also worsen as your feet are one of the weight-bearing joints. The saying goes,

'An extra pound on your stomach can equal five extra pounds of weight you are carrying around.

Losing 10 pounds off your stomach can mean fifty pounds of weight loss with each stride you take.'

Extra body weight can increase rheumatoid arthritis and psoriatic arthritis as it increases the symptom of painful inflammation.

I know it's not easy to lose weight, but it is best if you can, as it will help with your lifestyle, and you will over all feel better.

Exercise you knees

Movement.

Suppose you think that exercise will make your arthritis symptom worse, well! That is just a myth.

Exercise is central to managing your arthritis, whether it's osteoarthritis (wear and tear) or rheumatoid arthritis (the Immune system attacks the joints).

I know it can be hard for you to maintain an exercise program when you are already in pain and discomfort.

Research has shown that exercising regularly helps maintain joint functions whilst reducing pain, stiffness and fatigue. Also, exercising can be helpful with burning those calories and helping to shed those pounds.

You should stay active as possible, just gentle exercises like walking, pottering around the garden, and other ways of being active, for example:

Go to the gym, walk on the treadmill or bike, and do some swimming. Researchers say you should do two and half hours of aerobic exercises a week, split into five or ten minutes at a time, to make it easy on your joints.

Heat and cold packs.

You should use the heat pack if your feet or any other joints are painful; it helps to loosen the muscles and decrease the spasms, reducing the stiffness and pain.

A cold pack is to be used if your joints are inflamed. It helps the blood vessels in the surrounding muscles reduce the blood flow, causing inflammation. But do not put the ice pack straight onto your skin.

When you have spent all day on your feet, and they are inflamed, a cold pack or a bag of frozen peas (wrapped around a towel) can help the swelling and the pain.

Having custom-made orthotics can soothe arthritic foot pain. There are lots of ways that a Podiatrist can help you. Your shoes could be customized to change the method of how you walk. For example, they could limit the big toe joint, so it can't move when you walk, reducing discomfort.

Arthritis can vary between the right and left foot. Therefore, the orthotics could differ on each foot.

Alternative treatments.

Research has found that some supplements, like glucosamine and chondroitin, don't work well on most people. However, it's still recommended for people with osteoarthritis, which have fewer drug options than rheumatoid arthritis.

Another one is turmeric; this spice may help treat osteoarthritis and rheumatoid arthritis, as turmeric contains an antioxidant called curcumin, which fights inflammation.

Physical Therapy.

When you go to a physical therapist, they can manage your painful feet and reduce the inflammation.

These can include massage, whirlpool, cold packs and ultrasound. When the physical therapy has reduced the inflammation, they may do a program with you to stretch and strengthen to bring back the flexibility and strength and increase balance in the foot joints.

Pampering your feet.

When you get arthritis in the feet, there are chances that you have it in your hands as well. Therefore, keeping your toenails cut and smoothing any calluses on a regular basis is essential.

Find a salon pedicure near you and go every four to six weeks. But be careful to choose an excellent clean salon that uses disposable liners and take your own nail files, pumice stone, buffers etc…

When you have diabetes and arthritis, you should check with your physician to see if it is okay.

BUT FIRST, SEE YOUR PHYSICIAN OR DOCTOR WHEN YOU ARE DOING ANYTHING NEW.

Conclusion.

When you have arthritis, there is a chance that you will feel pain in your feet because feet have thirty joints which can have an extreme effect on arthritis. 

The most common type of arthritis in the foot is osteoarthritis, which is the joints’ wear and tear.  Also, it can be painful and inflamed.

There is nothing you can do about arthritis as it is incurable.  But you can slow down the pain, stiffness and swelling process.

You should always consult with your physical therapist when you want to do something new.  For example going on any supplements, doing new activities etc...
