Introduction.

Flaxseed oil is also called linseed oil, the seed is a size of a sesame seed and is brown in colour that comes from the flax plant. It plant is grown in the regions in Asia and Europe, which have been cultivating the plant for thousands of years, for its various uses.

The plant oil has been used for centuries, but only now has it been popular for its dietary supplement. 

In this blog I shall explore what is flaxseed, and how it helps the benefits and much more.

What is Flaxseed.

The seeds has a slightly nutty flavour. The flaxseed come in two forms,

They are:

Whole flaxseed: this has a hard outer shell. Whereas ground flaxseed is finely crushed. 

The ground flaxseed is easier to digest and absorbed and has the most healthy nutrients. Flaxseed is versatile for a variety of dishes, also you can sprinkle it on yoghurt, add to a smoothie or used in baking.

How Does Flaxseed Help.

The plant contains a variety of health benefits, that include:

  • heart problems.
  • reduced inflammation.
  • Helps with digestion.
  • Cognitive function,
  • Also helps with cancer.

But you should take flaxseed in moderation, as excessive intake could lead to digestive issues.

What is in Flaxseed.

Flaxseed or linseed oil, is full of fatty acids, particularly alpha-linolenic acid or (ALA), or you may know it as omega-3 fatty acid. Omega-3 fatty acids helps with keeping your body healthy.

Keeping your body healthy can include:

  • Supporting brain function,
  • Reducing inflammation,
  • and maintaining heart health.

Flaxseed oil can be essential for those of you that are following a vegetarian or vegan diets. 

As the flaxseed plant contains:

Dietary Fibre.

There are two types of dietary fibre, soluble and insoluble. The soluble fibre helps to stabilize blood sugar levels and lower cholesterol, whereas the insoluble fibre helps to keep regular bowel movements and your digestive health.

Nutrients and Protein.

Flaxseed is a good source of protein, and can help with a well-balanced, healthy diet. However, with any new supplement or any change, it is advised if you consult with your healthcare professional to make sure that it does not interact with any medication that you are taking.

Essential Minerals.

This last one is that the flaxseed has essential minerals, such as magnesium, potassium, and phosphorus. They can help with bodily functions such as IBS, and bone health, muscle function, and nerve transmission as in arthritis, and much more.

Benefits Of Flaxseed Oil.

The benefits of flaxseed are that it contains omega-3 fatty acids, which can help with a variety of conditions.

The conditions could include:

  • Lowering the risk of cardiovascular disease. It is done by lowering your blood pressure, and LDL (bad) cholesterol levels. Also, it can help with improving arterial function, by reducing the arterial plaque buildup, also decreased risk of heart arrhythmias.
  • Anti-Inflammatory Effects. Omega-3 fatty acids also has anti-inflammatory properties, which can benefit you, if you develop arthritis or any other conditions, or autoimmune disorder, that has symptoms of inflammation, and can lead to a variety of health issues.

By reducing inflammation, the flaxseed oil (or linseed oil) can help by improving the symptoms and your overall quality of life.

Improves the heart
  • Supports Brain Health. The omega-3 fatty acids, are also vital for your brain cell membranes. As it helps with your memory, and reduces the risk of any age-related cognitive failure.
  • Skin and Hair. Omega 3 fatty acids can help with giving you a healthy skin and hair. It is the oil that helps maintain your skin moisture levels, promote elasticity, and reduce inflammation, which can help if you have any skin conditions like eczema and psoriasis.
  • Promotes Digestive Health. The flaxseed oil helps with your digestion. The oil acts as a natural lubricant in the intestines, which eases bowel movements and preventing constipation.  

The ground flaxseed can also help to keep your gut healthy, as it is full of fibre that adds bulk to your stool motions and helps constipation. Therefore, it will help if you have conditions such as irritable bowel syndrome (IBS) and inflammatory bowel disease (IBD).

How To Use Flaxseed.

Ground flaxseed has a variety of ingredient, that can be added to your favourite dishes. Some general ways to enjoy ground flaxseed include:

1. Sprinkling it over yogurt, oatmeal, or smoothie bowls.

 2. Mixing it into baked goods like muffins, cookies, and bread.

3. Incorporating it into salad dressings or sauces.

BUT CAUTION.  DO NOT HAVE FLAXSEED IF YOUR ARE PREGNANT OR BREASTFEEDING, OR YOU ARE TAKING ANY BLOOD THINNERS. Always consult with your doctor health professional if you want to have anything new.

Conclusion.

In conclusion, ground flaxseed is packed with essential nutrients, which include omega-3 fatty acids, fibre, and lignans, it offers a range of health benefits, that include a healthy heart, helps with your brain function, also your skin and hair, and helps with your digestive system.
